Live at the Jelly Jamboree
Background
Milkshake Moustache’s first and only live album was performed at recorded at the Jelly Jamboree in 1979. The festival was held every year in the fields surrounding Melton Mowbray. The band had performed there on their first tour in 1972. Since that concert, the band had gone onto bigger and better things and headlined the main stage when they returned in 1979. The majority of their setlist consisted of their favourite and best known songs. They also included a few new songs that would appear on their next album.
Their rock stylings hyped up the record crowd into a frenzy. It was a mixture of younger students who loved the band’s sound and aesthetic, as well as a large contingent of classic hard rockers. The crowd was so large that a local biker’s club were brought in as extra men for security. The huge crowds added to the sense of occasion for a local band returning to their roots to perform in front of their friends and family.
The recording features the sound of crowd singing along with the band on their greatest hits. The biggest crowd reaction came with the “Milkshake Medley.” The band mashed up some of their favourite album deep cuts into an epic 11 minute song. It took the band a long time to quite work out how to merge the songs into each other especially rhyming lyrics from one song with those of another. They eventually worked it out and the mash-up was the highlight of the concert.
Album Art
The band invited a local photographer, Gregory Smith, to capture the momentous concert. Greg was given an all access pass and took hundreds of photos of the event. After the hype of the concert had died down, and the recordings had been edited, the band were ready to choose their album cover image. They met with Greg and viewed a copy of every picture he took of the trio. The one used was their favourite. They felt it captured their energy as well as documenting the large crowd enjoying their music. The Milkshake Moustache logo motif was created by an in house designer at Dekaf Records. The band loved it so much they used it on merchandise in the year following.
