Chips in the Corner
Chips in the Corner is the 3rd song on the track listing for Milkshake Moustache’s debut album, Drink Up, We’re Going. The lyrics were written by guitarist Scott Poulter while the music was written by drummer, Julie Treem. The song was performed by the trio with all three on vocals, Scott on electric guitar, Debbie on the keyboard, and Julie on the drums and extra percussion.
The lyrics of the song came from a story that Scott heard from his his friends John and Sandra White. John, one of the Gumball 5 gang, had gone to school with Scott and had got married early compared to his contemporaries. They both recounted the tale of how they met to Scott who loved the story so much he turned it into a song.
The couple were both from Leicester, but had never met each other until that night at the diner. John was working as a milkman at the time and only went into the diner for a quick snack. He got more than he bargained for when he caught the gaze of Sandra who was at art college at the time. Everything else happened just as the song suggests with them both falling in love from that night onwards.
John and Sandra were the best man and maid of honour at Scott and Debbie wedding. Their marriage still survives to this day, with John now retired, and Sandra still indulging her love for the arts. The cover the for single was shot by keen photographer Debbie when she invited Sandra back to the diner where her relationship first blossomed. Unfortunately the Simple Snack Diner was knocked down for new apartments, but thankfully it was immortalised in the lyrics and photography for the single.
Lyrics
I caught her eye
I thought it was my
lucky day,
I got out my booth
to learn the truth
about the lady who would change my life.
I was eating chips in the corner
when I saw her.
I couldn’t hear the jukebox anymore,
before I was half way across the floor
my heart was already there.
I sat next to her
the rest was a blur
that night.
Now we’re holding hands
walking down the strand
avoiding puddles by the sea.
Now we’re eating chips in the rain
and skipping down the lane.
Our food’s soggy and cold,
but I’m glad I was so bold
to win the jackpot in the gamble of my life.
It is ten years later
and I still love her
as much.
But now it’s not just us,
around are table there are four of us
enjoying a family portion of chips.
Oh we compliment each other
like bread and butter
like salt and pepper
and chips and us together.
Every year we go back,
we should put up a plaque
at the diner.
Oh the place that we met,
that we will never forget
when I was eating chips in the corner.
