Where's the Change?

Background

Where’s the Change is the second studio album by Chester band, The Refunds. It was released by Dekaf Records in the UK in 1963. The album saw them build on the early success of first debut with more pop melodies and catchy lyrics. Peter Swiss, the vocalist, wrote the majority of the songs with the other members of the band giving ideas and musical support where they could.

The album told of the day to day life and relationships of the band living in Chester. Two of the songs at the end of the album, Coach Trip With The Boys and Leave Me Here At The Seaside hold a special place in the band’s catalougue. Being from poor household’s the boy’s had never had a holiday, so with the small amount of money they made from their first album they all agreed to a coach trip together to Rhyl in Wales. It was a week they wouldn’t forget and the first time they enjoyed the spoils of their labour as a band.

To The Refunds’ fans, this album has sometimes been known as the Question album. This is because of the 5 songs in alternate order ask the questions Who?, What?, Where?, When? and Why? As Pete was writing the songs mostly by himself he added the question titles as a joke to himself to see how long it would take for his band mates to notice. Much to his amusement it wasn’t until an interviewer pointed it out that the other members noticed it.

Album Art

The photo for the front of the album comes courtesy of drummer, Henry. It was taken on the band’s memorable trip to Rhyl the year before. While the chaps were mooching about the shops, Harry stumbled upon a junk shop with a rather nice silver cigarette case proudly presented in the window. Harry liked the look of it and wanted to buy it for his Granddad as a souvenir of his trip. He went into the shop and handed over the £3 asking price for it. He only had a £10 note on him so paid for it with that. He took the case and his change and left. It took him a short walk out of the shop before realising that he had only been given a £5 note for change. He immediately turned round to get back into the shop, but the shopkeeper had already locked the door and closed up. Henry caught the funny moment when it dawned on Harry. As a small jibe at the dishonest shop keeper they named the album Where’s The Change and made sure his shop was visible on the cover, so any locals would avoid his shop in the future.
