Pomp and Ceremony

Background

After touring for two years and spending a lot of time together, Debbie and Scott fell in love and got married in 1978. To go along with the happy occasion, Milkshake Moustache recorded their fourth studio album Pomp and Ceremony. The album strayed from their rock roots with a few slower ballads mixed into the track listing. The overarching theme of the album was love, marriage, and tradition. It was also the first album where some of the tracks didn’t include all three band members. The songs K-I-S-S-I-N-G, Partners in Crime, Years From Now, were recorded by Debbie and Scott without Julie.

The new, more romantic sound was not well received by their classic rock fans, but a new audience opened up with many people buying this album as their first taste of Milkshake Moustache. One song that was enjoyed by both old and new fans was After Party. The trio are all credited as writers of this memorable song. The more upbeat rock sound is overlaid with funny stories from the band’s many experiences at weddings and wedding receptions. Particularly memorable stories mentioned in the lyrics include Julie’s uncle ripping his trousers on the dance floor, and Scott’s three cousins accidentally locking themselves out on a balcony of the venue. The funny lyrics and great rock rhythm showed that the band had not gone totally soft with their more romantic LP.

Album Art

The band wanted a happy couple on the cover of the album. By the time of the launch of the record, Debbie and Scott’s wedding photos still hadn’t come back from the developer, so instead they chose to feature the wedding of their close friends. The happy couple featured are Billy and Margaret Tyndale. All three members knew them from their childhood and had reacquainted themselves when Billy became the landlord of the Barley Mow, the pub the band frequented to write their songs. They were happy to have one of their wedding photos featured on the cover. The faint texture you can see in the background was actually a close-up of the lace of Debbie’s wedding dress for her big day.
